Day in the Life

Each day as an electrical apprentice brings hands-on learning and real-world experience. You will work alongside licensed electricians to install wiring, troubleshoot circuits, and maintain electrical systems. From bending conduit to installing transformers, you will apply what you learn in the classroom to practical tasks. At the end of the day, you will leave work knowing that you contributed to powering the world around you.

Career Skills You'll Learn:

Install Wiring

Learn to install and maintain electrical systems, including pulling wire and connecting it to power systems.

Repair Motor Controls

Understand and gain hands-on experience in repairing and maintaining electrical controls.

Read Blueprints

Learn how to interpret technical drawings used in construction.

Place Electrical Conduits

Gain hands-on experience to learn how to properly install and secure electrical conduits in various settings.

Install Outlets and Switches

Understand wire types, circuit configurations, and proper techniques for safely installing outlets and switches and know how they work.

Transformers and Circuit Breakers

Assess safety, route wiring, and property install and test transformers and circuit breakers in various settings.

Potential Career Paths

Journeyman Electrician

Licensed Journeyman electrician who installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems. Including industrial, commercial, residential, and service work settings.

Master Electrician

Experienced electrician who plays a key role in supervising other electricians and managing projects.

Project Manager (with further education)

Oversee the planning, execution, personnel, and completion of electrical projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and to the required standards.

Business Owner (with further education)

Responsible for all aspects of running an electrical contracting business, including electrical work, project management, and client relations.

Program Overview

The Electrical Apprenticeship program provides a solid understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC), its layout, the requirements for different electrical systems, and the components of those systems. This program discusses the risks involved with electricity and electrical systems, as well as the safety equipment and measures that are in place to protect electricians and the general public.

As an Electrical Apprentice, you will install and maintain electrical systems, placing wiring in buildings and repairing electrical controls on equipment. Some of your responsibilities will be reading blueprints and placing electrical conduits inside walls, ceilings, underground, and other areas. You will feed insulated wire through conduits and install various electrical equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, outlets, switches, and lighting.

Classroom Hours
1st & 2nd Years: M/W 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
3rd & 4th Years: T/Th 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Enrollment open to
Adults and High school students for the first year.
Second, third, and fourth year students require prior year completion and a current state apprentice license.

Matthew Standing

Matt Standing graduated from Ogden-Weber Technical College in Electrical Trades in 1999 and has 28 years of experience in the electrical industry, specializing in industrial, commercial, and residential electrical wiring. Prior to joining the OTECH team, Matt owned his own electrical company in Idaho. For the past 6 years, Matt has worked at OTECH as an electrical instructor and loves working with students, sharing his passion for the electrical field. Most of all, Matt enjoys seeing his students find their passion for the electrical industry.
